To give the subject some meaningful context, I believe it would certainly be useful to begin a topic by first discussing its value. Then I would certainly run through some easy cases. I have to emphasise that there are no dumb enquiries, anything to aid a student's understanding is important. After I have actually run through a couple of examples, I wish to have the student gone through their own example, speaking with me pretending they were the tutor and I was the tutee.
Lots of studies have shown that trying to describe a principle you have just discovered aids greatly in remembering and comprehension. If I'm satisfied with their training, I want to check their critical thinking by giving them a problem based upon everything discovered in the lesson, however with subtle changes that need the student to proactively engage with the work, rather than be on "auto-pilot".
Homework will be set on the topic discussed (absolutely nothing too intense), and further lessons will be carried on answering exam-styled enquiries prior to carrying on to the next theme.
Throughout sessions I would love to motivate a fairly informal, friendly atmosphere. I have a good time teaching, and I wish students have fun in my training sessions, and a relaxed mind is far better at learning.
